Our Top 10 Free Business Tools

14 February 2015

Our list of Free Business Tools for Small Business

As a small Graphic Design Studio in sunny Geelong Victoria, Martlette is always on the look out for great tools that help us do things better and keep us organised and connected with the world… and its great when we find tools that are FREE!

We often get asked what tools we use here at Martlette and many that we have found can be used in all sorts of businesses – not just graphic design studios. So here is a list of our Top 10! We hope you find them useful!

Trello is a collaboration tool that organises your projects into boards. In one glance, Trello tells you what’s being worked on, who’s working on what, and where something is in a process. The best thing is that its FREE and one of the easiest project management tools we have used here at Martlette! Check it out at

Dropbox is a home for all your photos, docs, videos, and files. Anything you add to Dropbox will automatically show up on all your computers, phones and even the Dropbox website — so you can access your stuff from anywhere and share with others. Martlette uses dropbox with many of its clients to share and send graphic design files and we love it!  Visit

LastPass remembers your passwords AND keeps them safe. We all know that our passwords should look something like this – “kQo=3oyB>”. But who’s got time to remember that?! LastPass does it for you. You install the app right into your browser (we use Chrome) and then watch the magic happen! Just don’t forget your password for LastPass and your winning! Visit

Thinking of sending out a regular newsletter to your members or clients? MailChimp helps you design email newsletters, share them on social networks, integrate with services you already use, and track your results once you send. It’s like your own personal publishing platform. We especially love the cheeky little monkey that guides you through the process of creating your email newsletter. For most small businesses – its free!! Check it out!

Spotify is a commercial music streaming service, where you can browse music and playlists created by others or searched by artist, album, genre, playlist, or record label. Starting up Spotify is part of every morning routine in the Martlette studio and has us pause every now and then for a loud sing along! You can sign up for free and browse millions of songs and playlists on your computer or mobile device and if the ads get too annoying, you can upgrade for a small monthly fee. Check it out at

No.6 – VIBER.

Viber on your desktop lets you send free messages as well as make free calls to other Viber users, on any device and network, in any country! Did I say free calls? Yes!! Free texts, calls and photo messages with fellow Viber users. It instantly integrates with your own contact list and uses your your existing WiFi, Office Internet or Mobile data plan to connect. Martlette loves Viber and uses it often to connect with interstate clients and collaborators. Check it out at

Pinterest is a visual discovery tool that you can use to find ideas for all your projects and interests. We here at Martlette love Pinterest and often create boards to share solely with a client who are either here in Geelong or interstate, so that we can both gather and share ideas – creating a “Mood Board” between us for graphic design inspiration. Its a great place to gather visual ideas for almost any project. Be warned.. scrolling can seem endless and it can be very addictive!! Check it out at

Google Analytics is a service offered by Google that generates detailed statistics about your website’s traffic and traffic sources and measures conversions and sales. It’s the most widely used website statistics service and the basic service is FREE OF CHARGE! This is a must have for any business with a website and is a valuable tool when measuring the effectiveness of any campaigns or blogging efforts you are making. Martlette is always checking up on who is visiting our website, what device they are using and where they are from – and all of this helps us understand how people are finding us online. Home to a thriving community of over 70,000 solo and micro businesses, Flying Solo is a source of information, advice and inspiration for Australian business owners. Flying Solo hosts Australia’s most active online small business discussion forums; helps soloists set up informal, local meetups around the country; stages events (Work in the Nude Day being one); partners with Government and the private sector; frequently contributes opinion and commentary to the media and gauges the pulse of the solo nation with detailed research surveys. You have the option to just sign up for free or join as a paid member for extra benefits. This is one of very few blogs and resource rich websites that Martlette enjoys reading every week!

No.10 – YOUTUBE!

Just about everything you wanted to know how to do, has been recorded, uploaded and viewed on YouTube for your learning pleasure. Whether its how to place an image correctly in a Microsoft Word Document, place a header in your Excel spreadsheet, or how to upload your first Youtube video – you’ll find a step by step guide ready to teach you how!
